  • Bikes For Kids

    Bikes For Kids is a Connecticut based non-profit organization that brings smiles to children one bike at a time. Bikes For Kids is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1989. Our volunteers collect, repair, and safety test donated used bicycles. The refurbished bicycles, along with new helmets, are given away to individuals of all ages and needs. Most donated bicycles remain in Connecticut, but some have reached children in other states and countries. More than 1,000 bicycles are given away annually. Requests for bicycles come from local and state social service organizations, churches, schools, non-profits, and individuals. 19,000 bicycles have been donated to date!

    Our programs support children’s mental health, children’s physical healthcare, the prevention of child abuse, the treatment of family violence, teen pregnancy, parent education, child guidance, and childcare.     Connecticut Audubon Society EcoTravel aids in the Society’s education and conservation mission by connecting people with the environment and by experiencing nature first hand through memorable nature trips and experiences. Our small group travel allows for close interaction in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere where travelers learn not only about avian ecology but also the history, culture and habitats of every destination we reach.     The Connecticut River Artisans Co-op was established in 1980 and is the oldest, continuously operating artist cooperative in Connecticut. We have an amazing selection of artwork, all Made in Connecticut by our members. Wall art, fine art, jewelry, handbags, stained glass, painted vintage items, pottery and cards are among the beautiful items we carry. There is always something new. Custom work is available! Members take turns running the store, we all work together to do various tasks that contribute to the running of the business.

  • Essex Art Association

    The Essex Art Association, a non-profit gallery located at 10 North Main Street, has been serving local artists since 1946. Located in a historic, unheated building, the gallery is seasonal but very active during the summer months. The association was founded as a place for artists to share and sell their work. This practice has continued and EAA is known as a friendly place where are all are welcome and openings are free to the public.

    Located in the heart of the historic Essex Village, Essex Boat Works has a long history, going back to the War of 1812, where the building of the U.S. warships were performed.We are proud to continue the legacy of top-notch customer relations and professional services as we highlight the ability to haul 100 tons.   • Essex Garden Club

    It began in 1952, the Essex Garden Club established an entity and became a member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut. Initially, a “white glove”, formal group of community-minded women set goals to enhance the villages of Essex, Ivoryton and Centerbrook and in so doing, created an organization that has over the years become an integral part of our community.   The white gloves and dresses have given way to blue jeans, and men have joined the membership ranks of the club, the fundamental goals remain the same: civic improvement and beautification of our town, development of education and conservation initiatives to benefit both the membership and the broader public, foster programs within the school system to enhance awareness of our natural resources and grant scholarships to those younger people who demonstrate an interest in environmental sciences.   • Essex Lions Club

    The Essex Lions club has been serving the communities of Essex, Centerbrook and Ivoryton since 1950.  More recently the Essex Lions merged with the Westbrook Lions Club and are now providing services to the town of Westbrook as well.  The services provided are based on the needs of the community and are constantly changing ranging from providing eye exams and glasses to persons that cannot afford it to doing yard work, giving rides to Dr.’s appointments, building and maintaining park buildings, donations to food banks, Christmas gifts to needy families, disaster assistance and scholarships.  Essex Lions also contributes to Lions Clubs International Foundation which funds grants, many of which have come back to Connecticut such as assistance for families affected by SuperStorm Sandy.  More recently we have started doing Pre-school eye screenings which provide early diagnosis for eye diseases which later are many times misinterpreted as learning disabilities.  One of read more

    The once Centerbrook Schoolhouse,  Essex Veterans Memorial Hall was established in 1946 with a continued purpose to provide refreshment, entertainment and social diversion of its members and guests as well as provide a meeting place, club rooms and equipment for the furthering of community activities and civic interests. Essex Veterans Memorial Hall has an inherent responsibility to financially or otherwise assist veterans, their families and the community. We have many events and activities throughout the year and welcome new members and patrons. Membership Meetings occur September through June on the first Sunday of the month at 1PM.

    Mihae Lee, artistic director The mission of Essex Winter Series is to bring the finest music, in live performance, to the Connecticut River Valley and Shoreline Region during the winter months and to cultivate its appreciation to the widest audience.
