2020 Annual Scarecrow Contest & FestiFall

October 8, 2020 - October 31, 2020

Experience Essex…Visit the 2020 Scarecrow FestiFall October 8 – 29!

Fall is in the air and Essex Board of Trade (EBOT) is excited to host its annual 2020 Scarecrow FestiFall! While COVID-safety guidelines preclude gathering for a traditional festival in Main Street Park… the annual Scarecrow show will go on!!!  On any beautiful Fall day between October 8 – 29, EBOT invites visitors and residents to stroll a lamp-post presentation of scarecrows and enjoy some alfresco dining and shopping. It’s the ultimate social distancing activity!

Scarecrow Display & Contest Starts October 8

The highlight of the Scarecrow FestiFall is the always popular “Scarecrow Lamp-Post Presentation” along the Main Streets of Essex, Centerbrook and Ivoryton villages. Scarecrows created by Essex residents and businesses will be hung on October 8.  Scarecrow viewers are encouraged to vote for their favorite. The first-place winner not only gets bragging rights, but will also receive an Experience Essex gift bag full of generously donated merchandise from Essex merchants.

Text to Vote

Residents and visitors can vote for their favorite scarecrow via TEXT as follows:

  • Text your favorite scarecrow’s entry number To: 74574 (short code)
  • The short code and entry number (ex. ESSEX2) will be labeled on each scarecrow
  • Limit is one entry per voter, per day
  • Voting opens October 8 and closes October 29
  • Winner will be announced Halloween, October 31, at EssexCT.com

Scavenger Hunt for Kids, October 8 -29

A must activity for kids is the second annual, “Mini-Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt” at participating retailers along Main Street, Essex Village. Just pick up a Scavenger Hunt map at Olive Oyl’s Cuisine with the map of participating merchants — Haystacks, Toys Ahoy, Emmy’s on Main, The Griswold Inn Store: Goods & Curiosities, Connecticut River Artisans and Connecticut River Museum. Adventure along Main Street to find the miniature scarecrow hidden in each store and ask the merchant to stamp your map for verification. Once you have five stamps, proceed to the Connecticut River Museum to find the sixth scarecrow, get your final map stamp and submit it at the front desk to claim your treat (while supplies last from 10/8 – 10/29)!

Alliance for Staying Socially Distanced & Safe!

EBOT members adhere to a “Covid-Safety Alliance” – all participating merchants and restaurants implement State of Connecticut and CDC guidelines. EBOT also requires event attendees to follow CDC protocol for Social Distancing and Mask Wearing:
