Art Explorers: Alma Thomas and Color Field Painting

July 1, 2023 @ 10:00 am

Free

Essex Library will host the second session of our Art Explorers series on Saturday, July 1 at 10 AM. Each session will focus on a famous artist and how they “found their voice” through their artistic form of expression!

For this session, we’ll look at Alma Thomas, the first black woman to have work displayed in the White House. Children will learn facts about Ms. Thomas by reading the book, Ablaze with Color: A Story of Painter Alma Thomas, view examples of her art, and then have the opportunity to create their own color field painting – a form of abstract mosaic-style painting Thomas was famous for.

This program is made possible in part by a $2,000 Summer Enrichment Grant, issued by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Connecticut State Library.

This program is free and open to children ages 5-12. Registration required. For more information about the program, please call the Essex Library at 860-767-1560 or see https://www.youressexlibrary.org/ The Essex Library is located at 33 West Avenue in Essex.
