McKinney National Wildlife Refuge and Great Thicket National Wildlife Refuge at the Essex Library on June 15 at 7:00 p.m. as he presents Eleanor Roosevelt in Westbrook: A Refuge for a First Lady. Explore the decades-long friendship Mrs. Roosevelt shared with Esther Lape and Elizabeth Read, owners of Salt Meadow, an idyllic estate that would eventually become Connecticut’s first national wildlife refuge. Rarely-seen historic photos, letters, newspaper columns, and other sources are highlights of Ranger Roche’s program. Learn how the “First Lady of the World” found relaxation here on the Connecticut shore.
