THE MOUNT: A GREAT AMERICAN HOUSE DESIGNED BY A GREAT AMERICAN WRITER
January 29, 2022 @ 4:00 pm
FreeEdith Wharton is known today mainly for her contribution to American literature, yet she was also a skilled pioneer of house and garden design. On January 29 at 4 p.m. the Essex Library will host Director of Visitor Services, Anne Schuyler, for a virtual overview of The Mount, Wharton’s elegant estate in Lenox, Massachusetts, which she designed with the same passion and lucidity she applied to her written work. Schuyler will survey the history of The Mount from its creation in 1902 to today, where it thrives as a cultural center that celebrates the intellectual, artistic, and humanitarian legacy of Edith Wharton.
Anne Schuyler, Director of Visitor Services currently leads the Visitors Services, Interpretation, and Exhibits teams. Since joining EWR in 2006, Anne has produced multiple exhibits and revised the interpretive content on Wharton and The Mount, highlighting, among other topics, Wharton’s humanitarian work during WWI and servant life at The Mount. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the University of Virginia and a Professional Certificate in Public History from Northeastern University in Boston.
