THE WOMEN BESIDE THE MEN: THE ARTISTS OF ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM WITH DR. ANNA SWINBOURNE
December 12, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
FREELong overlooked and undervalued, the female artists of this modern art movement made countless important and far-reaching contributions, from securing the actual space for the groundbreaking Ninth Street exhibition in 1951 to launching a new school of painting. In this talk at the Essex Library on Thursday, December 12 at 7 p.m., Dr. Anna Swinbourne will focus on the lives and work of five of these women (Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, and Joan Mitchell), exploring the myriad and ingenious ways they innovated and pioneered alongside their celebrated male counterparts.
Anna Swinbourne, PhD is an independent art historian, curator, and art advisor
engaged in a variety of scholarly and art-market endeavors. She is currently Interim
Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington,
Connecticut, and Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History at Trinity College.
This lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, or to register, please call the Essex Library at 860-767-1560. The Essex Library is located at 33 West Avenue in Essex.
