War in Ukraine: Update with Peter Rutland

As the invasion of Ukraine by Russia extends into a second year, Essex Library has invited Professor Peter Rutland provide an update on the war on May 23 at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom. In his talk, he will assess the state of the war in Ukraine, examining the possible scenarios for an end to the conflict, including whether or not China or Turkey could play a role in brokering a peace and what a peace deal acceptable to both sides might look like. Without an end in sight, he will also discuss if there is any prospect of more military gains for Ukraine or if the current stalemate will continue, as each side suffers from shortages of personnel and armaments, and if sanctions are working in bringing pressure to bear on Vladimir Putin.

Peter Rutland is a professor of government at Wesleyan University where he has taught since 1989. He is a specialist on Soviet and Russian politics, researching economic policy and nationalism. He has also taught at universities in England, Russia, Japan, Israel, and the Czech Republic. He is currently vice-president of the Association for Study of Nationalities, associate editor of Russian Review, and former editor-in-chief of Nationalities Papers.
