SUMMARY:Food Group: The Toast of the Town (Ages 4+)
DESCRIPTION:Program designed around The Food Group book series by Jory John\, written for an audience age 4-8. Kids ages 4-12 are welcome to join\, and for safety reasons\, kids ages 4-8 must have an adult participate alongside! \nThis summer’s popular Food Group program is BACK for the release of Jory John’s newest Food Group book\, The Toast of the Town! \nMeet Toast. He knows everybody\, and everybody knows him. He pops up wherever help is needed—shoveling sidewalks\, welcoming newcomers\, checking in on neighbors—just because. But Toast wasn’t always so warm and toasty. In his younger days\, he kept to himself\, loafed around\, and mostly just felt a little . . . stale. It took one life-changing moment to help him rise to the occasion. Can one ordinary piece of toast transform an entire community? And can helping others turn out to be the best thing since sliced bread? \nWhat to expect: \nCook\, read\, and explore with us in this deliciously fun program inspired by Jory John’s Food Group series. This program will combine stories with simple snack-making. We’ll kick things off by washing hands and learning a few basic food safety tips\, because every great chef starts with good habits. Then\, we’ll introduce the day’s featured book\, and participants will create a themed snack inspired by the story. While our creations bake\, chill\, or come together\, we’ll gather for an interactive read-aloud of the book. Once everything is ready\, participants can enjoy their snack and can take home a recipe card to try again at home! \nPossible Allergens: recipe contains white bread\, milk\, & food coloring. \nEssex Library programs are free and open to the public. \nRegistration is required as space is limited. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Sparks\, Shadows\, and Epic Romantasy with Helen Scheuerer (Virtual Author Talk)
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nJoin us virtually for a downright intoxicating conversation with bestselling fantasy author Helen Scheuerer as we delve into her thrilling new novel\, “Kiss of the Black Flame.” \nSome bargains are sealed with blood. Others with fire. The deadliest are sealed with a kiss… \nSaige Grayson has always believed stories could heal—even when her own body refuses to. As the most promising bookbinder in the capital\, she’s learned to work through chronic pain and crushing debt\, restoring other people’s treasures while trying not to fall apart herself. But when the man she owes decides her rare talent is worth more than her payments\, Saige is traded to the Azkari—an immortal race forged by the gods for war—and imprisoned in their ancient stronghold. \nHer only chance of survival lies with Archer\, a fallen Azkari general imprisoned beside her—cursed\, dangerous\, and impossible to ignore. He offers her a way out\, and in return\, Saige must help him retrieve and restore an ancient book. But the book is made of living magic\, powerful enough to stop a great evil—or unleash it. And as Saige works with Archer\, the tome begins to awaken something dark and dangerous—both in the realm and within her. \nAs their enemies close in and buried memories resurface\, Saige and Archer must decide what they’re willing to sacrifice: their freedom\, their fragile trust…or the spark that could ignite the world. \nRegister now to take part in the magic–and the spice–of Helen’s newest book! \nAbout the Author: \nHelen Scheuerer is a Sunday Times (London) bestselling author best known for her romantasy series\, The Legends of Thezmarr and The Ashes of Thezmarr. Her work has been highly praised for its strong\, flawed female characters and its action-packed plots. SUMMARY:Exile\, Memory\, and the Meaning of Home: A Conversation with Ana Hebra Flaster (Virtual Author Talk)
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nWhat happens when the country you love forces you out\, leaving you just 48 hours to abandon everything you’ve ever known? Join us online for an extraordinary online conversation with author and essayist Ana Hebra Flaster as we discuss her sweeping yet deeply intimate memoir Property of the Revolution: From a Cuban Barrio to a New Hampshire Mill Town. \nAna Hebra Flaster was six years old when her working-class family was kicked out of their Havana barrio for opposing communism. Once devoted revolutionaries themselves but disillusioned by the Castro government’s repressive tactics\, they fled to the US. The permanent losses they suffered—of home\, country\, and loved ones\, all within forty-eight hours—haunted her multigenerational family as they reclaimed their lives and freedom in 1967 New Hampshire. There\, they fed each other stories of their scrappy barrio—some of which Hebra Flaster has shared on All Things Considered—to resurrect their lost world and fortify themselves for a daunting task: building a new life in a foreign land. \nWeaving pivotal events in Cuba–US history with her viejos’—elders’—stories of surviving political upheaval\, impossible choices\, and “refugeedom\,” Property of the Revolution celebrates the indomitable spirit and wisdom of the women warriors who led the family out of Cuba\, shaped its rebirth as Cuban Americans\, and helped Ana grow up hopeful\, future-facing—American. But what happens when deeply buried childhood memories resurface\, demanding an adult’s reckoning? \nHere’s how the fiercest love\, the most stubborn will\, and the power of family put nine new Americans back on their feet. \nRegister today to gain a deeper\, more personal perspective on the refugee experience and the enduring quest to define home. \nAbout the Author: \nAna Hebra Flaster is journalist and the author of Property of the Revolution: From a Cuban Barrio to a New Hampshire Mill Town\, published in April 2025 (She Writes Press\, Simon and Schuster distribution). A former child-refugee from Cuba\, Ana’s work has appeared in national print and online media\, including: The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Washington Post\, and The Boston Globe. Her commentaries and storytelling have aired on NPR’s All Things Considered and PBS’s Stories from the Stage. Since its publication in April 2025\, Property of the Revolution has won first place in several international writing contests\, including: 2026 IBPA Book Awards (Memoir); 2025 Discovery Book Awards (Nonfiction overall); 2025 International Book Awards (Creative Nonfiction)\, and the 2025 IAP Book Awards (Memoir of the Year). The memoir was selected as the Nashua\, New Hampshire\, 2026 All-City Read and the Rivier University 2025 First-Year Read. Ana speaks regularly with student\, library\, and civic groups about her family’s journey and the refugee and immigrant experience. She is currently focused on covering the struggle for democracy and human rights in Cuba in her weekly Substack\, CubaCurious\, a project she launched in July 2024.

SUMMARY:"Faith and Fortune" Book Talk with Geoffrey Paul at Essex Library
DESCRIPTION:Register HERE or call the Library at 860-767-1560. \nJoin us at Essex Library when Geoffrey Paul presents his book Faith and Fortune: Henry and Amelia Champlin and America’s Maritime Ascendancy. In Faith and Fortune\, Paul and co-author Steven Ujifusa\, weave an intimate family narrative into larger historical events and the forces of economic change\, illuminating a largely forgotten chapter of American history. Faith and Fortune is both a compelling personal story and a vivid account of the family ties\, beliefs and community traditions that helped connect a young nation to an expanding world of commerce and opportunity. \nThis program is free and open to the public at Essex Library\, 33 West Avenue\, Essex\, CT. Light refreshments provided. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. \nAbout Geoffrey Paul\nGeoffrey Paul is a native of Essex\, Connecticut\, whose lifelong passion for local history has inspired decades of research into the people\, places\, and events that shaped the Connecticut River Valley. His discoveries of long-forgotten archives and historically significant artifacts have expanded the understanding of Connecticut’s maritime past\, with pieces from his collection now housed in leading museums. Geoffrey lives in the former home of Captain Henry and Amelia Champlin\, where his ongoing research continues to uncover new chapters of American history. \nAbout Faith and Fortune\nThis captivating\, extensively researched book places 19th century Essex and the Connecticut River Valley at the center of America’s early economic story.  The main narrative is the personal journey of Amelia and Henry Champlin\, whose deep faith\, love of family\, and commercial determination guided them through the opportunities and uncertainties of a rapidly changing world. \nAs the new nation found its place in the global economy\, the extraordinary rise of New York as America’s biggest port created new avenues for trade\, commerce\, and prosperity. Through the Champlin’s experiences\, readers will discover how seafaring families in Essex and throughout the Connecticut River Valley were connected to a vast maritime trade network stretching from New England to New York\, the nation’s Southern ports\, Great Britain\, France\, and beyond. Henry and Amelia’s story highlights their ambition and enterprise\, as well as the devotion and resilience that sustained them while building a future together. \nBy weaving an intimate family narrative into larger historical events and the forces of economic change\, the book illuminates a largely forgotten chapter of American history. Faith and Fortune is both a compelling personal story and a vivid account of the family ties\, beliefs and community traditions that helped connect a young nation to an expanding world of commerce and opportunity.
