SUMMARY:Essex Library: Virtual Author Talk with Casey McQuiston
DESCRIPTION:Bring an appetite for sizzling drama as we discuss New York Times bestselling author Casey McQuiston’s latest romantic comedy\, The Pairing. Register HERE.\nThis program is FREE and open to the public. \nWhen two bisexual exes accidentally book the same European food and wine tour\, they challenge each other to a hookup competition to prove they’re over each other—except they’re definitely not. Theo and Kit have been a lot of things: childhood best friends\, crushes\, in love\, and now estranged exes. After a brutal breakup on the transatlantic flight to their dream European food and wine tour\, they exited each other’s lives once and for all. Time apart has done them good. Theo has found confidence as a hustling bartender by night and aspiring sommelier by day\, with a long roster of casual lovers. Kit\, who never returned to America\, graduated as the reigning sex god of his pastry school class and now bakes at one of the finest restaurants in Paris. Sure\, nothing really compares to what they had\, and life stretches out long and lonely ahead of them\, but—yeah. It’s in the past. All that remains is the unused voucher for the European tour that never happened\, good for 48 months after its original date and about to expire. Four years later\, it seems like a great idea to finally take the trip. Solo. Separately. \nIt’s not until they board the tour bus that they discover they’ve both accidentally had the exact same idea\, and now they’re trapped with each other for three weeks of stunning views\, luscious flavors\, and the most romantic cities of France\, Spain\, and Italy. It’s fine. There’s nothing left between them. So much nothing that\, when Theo suggests a friendly wager to see who can sleep with their hot Italian tour guide first\, Kit is totally game. And why stop there? Why not a full-on European hookup competition? But sometimes a taste of everything only makes you crave what you can’t have. Register now to join our discussion about Casey McQuiston’s spiciest book yet! \nAbout the Author: Casey McQuiston is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of romantic comedies\, including One Last Stop\, Red\, White & Royal Blue\, I Kissed Shara Wheeler\, and The Pairing. Red\, White & Royal Blue was adapted into a movie in 2023 and released on Amazon Prime. Casey was recently named on the 2022 Time100 Next List. Their writing has appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, and Bon Appetit. Born and raised in southern Louisiana\, Casey now lives in New York City with a poodle mix named Pepper.

SUMMARY:Thursdays on the Dock: Local Honey
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays on the Dock has been a shoreline staple for 16 years and remains the premier destination for waterfront music. Swing by each Thursday evening in July and August\, bring a chair or blanket\, listen to a free concert\, and watch the sun go down over the river. \nBorn out of a mutual respect for all things auditory and a humble appreciation for an organic evolution\, lifelong friends Frank Natter\, Erin Smith\, and Abraham Wilson have embarked on an unforgettable musical journey: the band Local Honey. Steely and deliberate songwriting that casually staggers down the line between rhythm and melody\, laced with loose yet conscious jams\, and extraordinary vocals will transport any listener to another realm. Experiencing an amazing live show is one of life’s sweetest pleasures and for the person who is treated to Local Honey\, they will be given music performed with pure emotion\, raw talent\, and endless gratitude. \nThis music series is generously supported by Privé Swiss Wellness. \nIn case of inclement weather\, please check our site. All updates will be shown there.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Living the Otter Life with Katherine Applegate
DESCRIPTION:Join us as award-winning author and summer reading champion Katherine Applegate talks to viewers about her enthusiastically heartwarming novel in verse\, Odder. \nEveryone wants to meet Odder\, the Queen of Play. Odder spends her days off the coast of central California\, practicing her underwater acrobatics and spinning the quirky stories for which she’s known. She’s a fearless daredevil\, curious to a fault. But when Odder comes face-to-face with a hungry great white shark\, her life takes a dramatic turn\, one that will challenge everything she believes about herself―and about the humans who hope to save her. \nKatherine Applegate’s Odder is inspired by the true story of a Monterey Bay Aquarium program that pairs orphaned otter pups with surrogate mothers. This poignant and humorous tale told in free-verse examines bravery and healing through the eyes of one of nature’s most beloved and charming animals. \nAbout the Author: Katherine Applegate is the Newbery Medal-winning and #1 New York Times bestselling author of numerous books for young readers\, including The One and Only Ivan\, Wishtree\, Crenshaw\, the Endling series\, the Roscoe Riley Rules chapter books series\, and the Animorphs series.  She lives with her husband\, who writes as the author Michael Grant\, and their children in California. \nEssex Library programs are free and open to the public. Register and submit questions for the author here: https://libraryc.org/essexlib/77647

SUMMARY:Essex Library: Author Talk with Sam Tanenhaus: Buckley- The Life and the Revolution That Changed America
DESCRIPTION:Register HERE. \nIn 1951\, with the publication of God and Man at Yale\, a scathing attack on his alma mater\, twenty-five-year-old William F. Buckley\, Jr.\, seized the public stage—and commanded it for the next half century as he led a new generation of conservative activists and ideologues to the peak of political power and cultural influence. \nTen years before his death in 2008\, Buckley chose prize-winning biographer Sam Tanenhaus to tell the full\, uncensored story of his life and times\, granting him extensive interviews and exclusive access to his most private papers. Thus began a deep investigation into the vast and often hidden universe of Bill Buckley and the modern conservative revolution. \nBuckley vividly captures its subject in all his facets and phases: founding editor of National Review\, the twentieth century’s most influential political journal; syndicated columnist\, Emmy-winning TV debater\, and bestselling spy novelist; ally of Joseph McCarthy and Barry Goldwater; mentor to Ronald Reagan; game-changing candidate for mayor of New York. \nTanenhaus also has uncovered the darker trail of Bill Buckley’s secret exploits\, including CIA missions in Latin America\, dark collusions with Watergate felon Howard Hunt\, and Buckley’s struggle in his last years to hold together a movement coming apart over the AIDS epidemic\, culture wars\, and the invasion of Iraq—even as his own media empire was unraveling. \nAt a crucial moment in American history\, Buckley offers a gripping and powerfully relevant story about the birth of modern politics and those who shaped it. \nJoin us in welcoming Sam Tanenhaus for a memorable evening of American history. With thanks to Southeast Connecticut World Affairs Council for their collaboration on this event.
