SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Living the Otter Life with Katherine Applegate
DESCRIPTION:Join us as award-winning author and summer reading champion Katherine Applegate talks to viewers about her enthusiastically heartwarming novel in verse\, Odder. \nEveryone wants to meet Odder\, the Queen of Play. Odder spends her days off the coast of central California\, practicing her underwater acrobatics and spinning the quirky stories for which she’s known. She’s a fearless daredevil\, curious to a fault. But when Odder comes face-to-face with a hungry great white shark\, her life takes a dramatic turn\, one that will challenge everything she believes about herself―and about the humans who hope to save her. \nKatherine Applegate’s Odder is inspired by the true story of a Monterey Bay Aquarium program that pairs orphaned otter pups with surrogate mothers. This poignant and humorous tale told in free-verse examines bravery and healing through the eyes of one of nature’s most beloved and charming animals. \nAbout the Author: Katherine Applegate is the Newbery Medal-winning and #1 New York Times bestselling author of numerous books for young readers\, including The One and Only Ivan\, Wishtree\, Crenshaw\, the Endling series\, the Roscoe Riley Rules chapter books series\, and the Animorphs series.  She lives with her husband\, who writes as the author Michael Grant\, and their children in California. \nEssex Library programs are free and open to the public. Register and submit questions for the author here: https://libraryc.org/essexlib/77647

SUMMARY:Essex Library: Author Talk with Sam Tanenhaus: Buckley- The Life and the Revolution That Changed America
DESCRIPTION:Register HERE. \nIn 1951\, with the publication of God and Man at Yale\, a scathing attack on his alma mater\, twenty-five-year-old William F. Buckley\, Jr.\, seized the public stage—and commanded it for the next half century as he led a new generation of conservative activists and ideologues to the peak of political power and cultural influence. \nTen years before his death in 2008\, Buckley chose prize-winning biographer Sam Tanenhaus to tell the full\, uncensored story of his life and times\, granting him extensive interviews and exclusive access to his most private papers. Thus began a deep investigation into the vast and often hidden universe of Bill Buckley and the modern conservative revolution. \nBuckley vividly captures its subject in all his facets and phases: founding editor of National Review\, the twentieth century’s most influential political journal; syndicated columnist\, Emmy-winning TV debater\, and bestselling spy novelist; ally of Joseph McCarthy and Barry Goldwater; mentor to Ronald Reagan; game-changing candidate for mayor of New York. \nTanenhaus also has uncovered the darker trail of Bill Buckley’s secret exploits\, including CIA missions in Latin America\, dark collusions with Watergate felon Howard Hunt\, and Buckley’s struggle in his last years to hold together a movement coming apart over the AIDS epidemic\, culture wars\, and the invasion of Iraq—even as his own media empire was unraveling. \nAt a crucial moment in American history\, Buckley offers a gripping and powerfully relevant story about the birth of modern politics and those who shaped it. \nJoin us in welcoming Sam Tanenhaus for a memorable evening of American history. With thanks to Southeast Connecticut World Affairs Council for their collaboration on this event.
