SUMMARY:Art Classes for Ages 7-11
DESCRIPTION:In this session the focus is on the Line……a moving point\, a dot that goes for a walk which can vary in length\, width\, direction and curvature. The alphabet is composed of lines so projects will include each child’s name and letters of the alphabet as a focus for designing an Egyptian Cartouche where children use the hieroglyphic alphabet to sketch the symbols that represent the letters or sounds of their names.  Their names will also be designed into a colorful drawing as they review color theory: primary\, secondary\, warm\, cool\, complimentary & tertiary colors. Using their knowledge of color theory and lines they will create an abstract crayon-resist watercolor painting connecting the letters of the alphabet. They’ll practice more line drawings as they learn to draw word art animals and finally design a poster with a short positive message and illustrations to help spotlight their message. \n April 8\, 2026 – May 13\, 2026\n 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm \nAll classes are held on Wednesdays\, 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM at Spectrum Gallery\, 61 Main Street\, Centerbrook.  Cost is $125 per child.  Dates are as follows: April 8\, April 22\, April 29; May 6\, May 13. She maintains an active exhibition schedule that includes museums\, juried national\, regional\, and local exhibitions\, as well as commercial galleries in both solo and group shows. Her work is held in permanent and private collections. Whitcher is frequently invited to serve as an art juror\, visiting artist\, mentor\, guest speaker\, and award consultant. She has completed residencies at Zea Mays Printmaking and the Vermont Studio Center. An elected member and President Emeritus of Connecticut Women Artists\, she also holds elected memberships in the New Haven Paint & Clay Club\, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts\, CT+6\, and Zea Mays Printmaking. Her work has been widely exhibited in both juried and invitational settings\, including the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts\, Mystic Museum of Art\, New Britain Museum of American Art’s “Nor’easter” exhibition\, Lyme Art Association\, Essex Art Association\, and the New Haven Paint and Clay Club\, among others\, with additional appearances in national and regional exhibitions such as the Cooperstown National Juried Show and a four-person family exhibition at Hoxie Gallery in Westerly\, Rhode Island. She has also presented solo and small group exhibitions at the Harmon Fine Arts Center at Drake University and the John Slade Ely House. Her painting practice reflects decades of experience and a commitment to continual evolution\, guided by a search for strong composition rooted in line\, form\, movement\, and design. Avoiding confinement to a single style or palette\, her work explores the interplay of light\, shadow\, and color\, flattening the picture plane through pattern while balancing traditional and contemporary approaches. Through this synthesis\, she aims to evoke both strength and mystery\, engaging viewers on an emotional and intellectual level. \nAs a reminder\, the EAA Spring Open Show runs until Saturday\, May 9th. \n

SUMMARY:Women of '76
DESCRIPTION:As part of our America 250 programming\, Essex Historical Society (EHS) is excited to present special events that bring lesser-known stories of America’s past to the forefront. \nStep into the untold side of the American Revolution on Sunday\, May 17 at 4:00 pm at Centerbrook Meeting House\, as EHS welcomes Rita Parisi of Waterfall Productions for a powerful solo theatrical performance of Women of ’76. This richly costumed production explores the lives of real women who witnessed\, documented\, and in some cases directly influenced the course of the Revolution. Audiences will encounter figures rarely featured in history books\, including Baroness Frederika von Riedesel\, whose journals vividly describe the chaos of war; Prudence Wright\, the Massachusetts patriot who led a militia of women to capture Tory spies; Nancy Hart\, the fearless Georgia frontierswoman who confronted British soldiers; Mary Katharine Goddard\, the printer who boldly published the first Declaration of Independence naming its signers; and Mary Gould Almy\, a loyalist diarist whose accounts chronicle the siege of Newport. Together\, their stories—patriot and loyalist\, American and foreign—reveal a deeper\, more complex portrait of the Revolutionary era. \nDon’t miss this compelling performance that gives voice to the women of the Revolution. For more information\, please contact Essex Historical Society at membership@essexhistory.org \n\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:Forces of Nature Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Explore the power\, beauty\, and intensity of the natural world with Spectrum Art Gallery’s Forces of Nature\, a show examining nature’s strength in all its forms. Climate change has made the forces of nature feel more urgent\, visible\, and dangerous\, but nature has always carried immense power\, from destructive storms and turbulent landscapes to the steady\, predictable rhythms that shape life on earth. \nArtists in the exhibition interpret this theme broadly\, capturing subjects such as storms\, wind\, water\, fire\, changing seasons\, geological movement\, and other expressions of nature’s beauty\, drama\, and strength. Together\, the works reflect both the awe-inspiring force of the natural world and the enduring patterns that continue to shape our environment\, our landscapes\, and our lives. \nThe show’s Opening Reception is Friday\, May 22 from 6:30-8:30pm. Visitors are invited to meet participating artists\, explore the exhibition\, and enjoy wine and refreshments while experiencing the gallery’s newest collection of artwork and fine crafts. The gallery will also host an Open House\, Saturday May 23 with refreshments.  Forces of Nature runs through Friday\, July 3. \nSpectrum Gallery also offers an Artisans Store filled with pottery\, glass\, home décor\, children’s toys\, jewelry\, and other handcrafted accessories created by regional artists. \nSpectrum Art Gallery is located 61 Main St.\, Centerbrook\, CT. Gallery hours: Wed–Sat (12–6pm) and Sun (12–5pm).
