SUMMARY:The Witness Stones Project - Thomas Sobuck
DESCRIPTION:The Witness Stones Project\, a program of Historic New England\, seeks to recognize and remember enslaved people who helped build our communities. St. John’s Episcopal Church in Essex has placed two Witness Stones in honor of people enslaved by members of our congregation. \nOn October 11\, 2026\, at 11:45 a.m.\, the St. John’s Speaker Series will tell the story of Thomas Sobuck\, a young man from the Nehantic tribe who was indentured to a founding member of the First Episcopal Society of Saybrook as the church was then known since Essex was not incorporated until the mid-1800s. Records reveal that Sobuck’s wages from his work aboard the Brig Ann were directed to Charles Williams\, a founder of this congregation. This vessel was owned by another member of this congregation\, Noah Scovell. \nThe public is invited to learn more\, to hear Thomas Sobuck’s story\, and attend the placing a Witness Stone in his honor in the St. John’s Meditation Garden. Members of the Nehantic community will be present to tell their story and to give thanks for the life of their ancestor. \nSt. John’s is located on Main Street in Essex at the corner of Cross Street\, directly across from the Essex Town Park. \nFor information\, contact the church at 860-767-8095 or admin@stjohnsessex.org.

SUMMARY:In Gallery - Shrine Assemblage
DESCRIPTION:During this class participants will create three-dimensional artistic compositions made by combining various everyday objects\, scraps and/or materials such as wood\, metal\, cloth or paper into a unified whole. \nAssemblage is closely related to collage but extends into sculpture. It is a mixed media construction combining the artist’s creativity and the visual appeal of themed collections. \nYour collections mirror you and inspire you to create. Put on your “Bag Lady “garb and wherever you go let your creative instincts take over. As a mixed media artist\, you most likely have already been finding inspiration in 3-dimensional paraphernalia and cut up imagery. Assemblage creates a synchronicity between you and the objects you choose to use. It highlights transformation of your collections and “spotlights” a theme\, letting images and objects speak to the viewer. \nRegina Thomas’ collage and mixed media art is a mélange of visual stimuli\, colors\, and shapes involving different genres from the representational to the abstract.  These multi-layered works portray her view of the world\, never realistic\, injecting her own narratives\, metaphors\, and icons.  Regina works instinctually\, and her desire is to stimulate and intrigue the viewer\, make a connection\, bringing their own experiences to the work. \nRegina has lived and traveled throughout Asia and Europe.  While in London\, she attended Richmond University concentrating on the Art Disciplines as well as Studio classes.  Upon her return to the states she continued refining her art through classes and workshops at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design)\, The New Art Center in Newton – MA\, South Shore Art Center – MA\, West Hartford Art League\, Creative Arts Workshop/New Haven\, CT\, Yale University and The British Art Museum. \nRegina has been included in many juried exhibitions in New England. Thomas shows in private galleries and has private collectors across the U.S.\, Europe\, South America and Asia. Her most recent shows have been at The John Slade Ely House in New Haven\, and The Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook where she also holds classes in collage and mixed media art. \nDates: Wednesdays Sept. 23\, 30; Oct. 7\, 14\, 21

DESCRIPTION:In this session the focus is on the Line……a moving point\, a dot that goes for a walk which can vary in length\, width\, direction and curvature. The alphabet is composed of lines so projects will include each child’s name and letters of the alphabet as a focus for designing an Egyptian Cartouche where children use the hieroglyphic alphabet to sketch the symbols that represent the letters or sounds of their names.  Their names will also be designed into a colorful drawing as they review color theory: primary\, secondary\, warm\, cool\, complimentary & tertiary colors. Using their knowledge of color theory and lines they will create an abstract crayon-resist watercolor painting connecting the letters of the alphabet. They’ll practice more line drawings as they learn to draw word art animals and finally design a poster with a short positive message and illustrations to help spotlight their message. \nSharon Lee Mullen-Reynolds knew in High School that she was to be an Art teacher.  That is exactly what she did; for 36 years she taught Visual Art in the city of New Haven.  Her career hi-light was teaching 22 years at the Betsy Ross Arts Magnet Middle School.  During her tenure there she was a published Fellow at Yale N.H.Teachers Institute for 2 years\, the  Department Chairperson for 8 years and creator of As Far As The Eye Can See a school-wide art exhibit. \nSince her retirement in 2016\, she has been attending numerous art exhibits and installations locally and in NYC\, specifically Frida Kahlo’s exhibit at the Brooklyn Art Museum which led her to create Frida- inspired floral headpieces. In 2017 she started The Kindness Rock art installation at the Branford Festival. \nSharon is an artist who believes that art can heal your soul.  In 2022 she sold her headpieces at the Ukrainian Roman Catholic church for the benefit of Ukraine’s War effort and donated 5 Ukrainian Strong “Petals for Peace” paintings to raise additional funds. These paintings were showcased on Channel 8 news. \nIn addition to her headpieces\, Sharon works in mixed-media\, crafts\, collage\, and watercolor landscape en plein air. Sharon’s artwork has been exhibited at City-Wide Open Studios\, The ARTS Council\, Calligraphers Guild\, and is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook\, Connecticut. \nRegistration must go through Park & Recreation \nTo register visit: Essex Park and Recreation \nDates: Wednesdays\, Sept. 16\, 23\, 30; October 7\, 14

SUMMARY:At the Gallery - Personal Shrine Assemblage

After retiring\, she moved to her current home in Connecticut. \nSpending quality time in Southwest Florida\, Sandra’s inspiration flourished into a vivid explosion of color and creativity. Surrounded by exotic wildlife in their lush habitats\, she found herself constantly flooded with imagery that sparked emotional\, expressive artwork. \n“The vibrant variation of color on the fish and other wildlife — as well as their\n               surroundings —is more than exciting to capture in paint\,” she says. \nSandra earned her BFA from the University of Hartford Art School and went on to receive a National Bennie Award for logo design\, the Chase Paper Merit Award for Printing Techniques\, and has exhibited her work in numerous juried shows.  She also built a successful freelance graphic design career\, working with clients such as Revlon\, Bayer Pharmaceuticals\, Endurance Reinsurance\, IBM\, and The Hampton Designer Showhouse\, to name a few. \nNow fully retired\, Sandra devotes her time to creating commissioned pieces\, animal portraits\, and using photography as a tool to capture the natural world that continues to inspire her artwork.
