SUMMARY:Children's Art Program - Session 1\, Ages 7-11
DESCRIPTION:In this session the focus is on the Line……a moving point\, a dot that goes for a walk which can vary in length\, width\, direction and curvature. The alphabet is composed of lines so projects will include each child’s name and letters of the alphabet as a focus for designing an Egyptian Cartouche where children use the hieroglyphic alphabet to sketch the symbols that represent the letters or sounds of their names.  Their names will also be designed into a colorful drawing as they review color theory: primary\, secondary\, warm\, cool\, complimentary & tertiary colors. Using their knowledge of color theory and lines they will create an abstract crayon-resist watercolor painting connecting the letters of the alphabet. They’ll practice more line drawings as they learn to draw word art animals and finally design a poster with a short positive message and illustrations to help spotlight their message. \nSharon Lee Mullen-Reynolds knew in High School that she was to be an Art teacher.  That is exactly what she did; for 36 years she taught Visual Art in the city of New Haven.  Her career hi-light was teaching 22 years at the Betsy Ross Arts Magnet Middle School.  During her tenure there she was a published Fellow at Yale N.H.Teachers Institute for 2 years\, the  Department Chairperson for 8 years and creator of As Far As The Eye Can See a school-wide art exhibit. \nSince her retirement in 2016\, she has been attending numerous art exhibits and installations locally and in NYC\, specifically Frida Kahlo’s exhibit at the Brooklyn Art Museum which led her to create Frida- inspired floral headpieces. In 2017 she started The Kindness Rock art installation at the Branford Festival. \nSharon is an artist who believes that art can heal your soul.  In 2022 she sold her headpieces at the Ukrainian Roman Catholic church for the benefit of Ukraine’s War effort and donated 5 Ukrainian Strong “Petals for Peace” paintings to raise additional funds. These paintings were showcased on Channel 8 news. \nIn addition to her headpieces\, Sharon works in mixed-media\, crafts\, collage\, and watercolor landscape en plein air. Sharon’s artwork has been exhibited at City-Wide Open Studios\, The ARTS Council\, Calligraphers Guild\, and is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook\, Connecticut. \nRegistration must go through Park & Recreation \nTo register visit: Essex Park and Recreation \nDates: Wednesdays\, Sept. 16\, 23\, 30; October 7\, 14

SUMMARY:At the Gallery - Personal Shrine Assemblage
DESCRIPTION:During this class participants will create three-dimensional artistic compositions made by combining various everyday objects\, scraps and/or materials such as wood\, metal\, cloth or paper into a unified whole. \nAssemblage is closely related to collage but extends into sculpture. It is a mixed media construction combining the artist’s creativity and the visual appeal of themed collections. \nYour collections mirror you and inspire you to create. Put on your “Bag Lady “garb and wherever you go let your creative instincts take over. As a mixed media artist\, you most likely have already been finding inspiration in 3-dimensional paraphernalia and cut up imagery. Assemblage creates a synchronicity between you and the objects you choose to use. It highlights transformation of your collections and “spotlights” a theme\, letting images and objects speak to the viewer. \nRegina Thomas’ collage and mixed media art is a mélange of visual stimuli\, colors\, and shapes involving different genres from the representational to the abstract.  These multi-layered works portray her view of the world\, never realistic\, injecting her own narratives\, metaphors\, and icons.  Regina works instinctually\, and her desire is to stimulate and intrigue the viewer\, make a connection\, bringing their own experiences to the work. \nRegina has lived and traveled throughout Asia and Europe.  While in London\, she attended Richmond University concentrating on the Art Disciplines as well as Studio classes.  Upon her return to the states she continued refining her art through classes and workshops at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design)\, The New Art Center in Newton – MA\, South Shore Art Center – MA\, West Hartford Art League\, Creative Arts Workshop/New Haven\, CT\, Yale University and The British Art Museum. \nRegina has been included in many juried exhibitions in New England. Thomas shows in private galleries and has private collectors across the U.S.\, Europe\, South America and Asia. Her most recent shows have been at The John Slade Ely House in New Haven\, and The Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook where she also holds classes in collage and mixed media art.

SUMMARY:Modern Minimal: Exploring Analog Collage
DESCRIPTION:This art class welcomes participants of all skill levels who are interested in analog collage. The course introduces the fundamentals of collage\, focusing on minimalism and the use of a limited palette. Through guided exercises\, the class learns how to select and arrange images to create visually engaging compositions. Emphasis is placed on simplicity and balance to encourage creativity within constraints and foster an appreciation for a clean\, modern aesthetic. \nOver four studio sessions\, participants practice the essential methods of analog collage: selection of substrates\, cutting techniques\, adhesive applications\, color theory\, and composition.  Projects such as creating a master board\, starting and updating a studio notebook\, designing artist trading cards and finally creating a personal collage are designed to practice newly acquired skills and  encourage participants to develop their own unique modern aesthetic. Small supply list available upon registration. \nMolly Waite Lund is an analog collage artist who lives in Essex\, Connecticut.  As a self-taught artist\, Lund is continuously experimenting with color\, shape\, relationships\, and negative space.  She is compelled to repurpose vintage papers as a reminder of the history that has shaped her life. In her collages\, the world that Lund imagines is a place where the familiar becomes unfamiliar\, and the impossible becomes ordinary. \nLund is active in the online collage community\, frequently joining challenges to create collages around themes or prompts.  These interactions have resulted in Lund’s work being selected for publication in books\, magazines\, and on a deck of cards; for inclusion in national and international public displays of collage works; and exhibition at local art galleries in Connecticut and New York. Lund’s work was also displayed in a solo show at South of Main Art Collective during June\, July\, and August 2022. Her work is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook\, Connecticut.

SUMMARY:River View Cemetery Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join EHS Director\, Melissa Josefiak as she guides a tour of historic River View Cemetery\, which dates back over 300 years! Located on the shores of the Connecticut River\, River View Cemetery testifies to the early history of “Potapaug\,” as Essex was once known\, with the oldest gravestones dating from the early 1700s.  Come hear the stories of the cemetery’s ‘residents’ including: the influence of the town’s first pastor: a traitorous sea captain; an enterprising mother/daughter team; and many other engaging and touching tales.  Learn about changes in gravestone art – from grimacing “death’s heads” to ornate obelisks.  Enjoy the cemetery’s beautiful grounds as we trace its history from a simple burial yard to the park-like setting of today\, especially during this twilight tour starting at 5pm.  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe tour lasts about an hour over uneven\, sloped\, grassy terrain for about half a mile.  Walkers should wear proper footwear and possibly bring a flashlight for the twilight tours.  While this tour is based on historical facts and is not intended to be ‘haunted’\, historical details about death and disease may disturb young walkers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEach tour is $10 per person; free to EHS members.   Limited parking is available in the cemetery or along North Main Street.  Ample parking is available next door at 31 North Main Street\, Essex.  Please meet at the base of the cemetery’s driveway. \nEHS expresses its gratitude to the Board of River View Cemetery for their continued support of this program. For more information on walking tours\, please click here.  In case of inclement weather\, updated information will appear under the Events tab on EHS’s website\, Facebook and Instagram. \n\n\nReception at House of the Triple Moon! \n\n\n\n\nJoin us after the walk for a special reception hosted by our friends at House of the Triple Moon! Shop for seasonal items\, enjoy a cup of cider\, and explore a local business. All are welcome! \n\n\nSpace is limited so reserve your place NOW!

SUMMARY:Painting a Black Cat in Watercolor
DESCRIPTION:For many\, painting a dark or black subject in watercolor is challenging\, but this workshop will put all your fears aside and help you overcome those obstacles. The techniques used to paint this particular subject can be applied to virtually anything dark\, like a black dog or someone’s hair or jacket\, etc.  Instructor provides reference(s)\, or participants can use their own\, from which a contour (outline) drawing will be made by each participant before class. Instructor shows all steps taken to create a complete painting. A basic drawing ability is helpful but not necessary. Supply list provided upon registration. \nBivenne Harvey Staiger is known for her colorful\, dramatic watercolors of natural motifs she loves\, like birds\, other animals and flowers\, and is the recipient of many prestigious awards.  Among the most recent is the Silver Medal from the American Watercolor Society’s 152nd International Exhibition (2019).  She is professionally affiliated with many art groups\, including but not limited to the Salmagundi Club\, American Artists’ Professional League\, Academic Artists Association\, Connecticut Academy of Fine Artists\, Connecticut Watercolor Society\, and many others.  Bivenne regularly gives instruction\, demonstrations and workshops in watercolor\, and in fact has an upcoming weekend workshop\, focusing on painting flowers in watercolor\, at Yale Peabody Museum in August.  At least two major solo exhibitions and a few group exhibitions featuring her work\, including Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook\, Connecticut\, are scheduled for the end of this year and next.
