SUMMARY:Little Learners Story Time: Bats! (Ages 2-5)
DESCRIPTION:Program for kids ages 2-5. \nFlap into the fun with a bat-themed story time featuring spooky stories\, silly songs\, and a craft that’s sure to be fang-tastic! \nJoin us for themed stories\, songs\, rhymes\, and crafts! We’ll learn early literacy concepts like colors\, shapes\, opposites\, the ABCs and much more\, to prepare our pre-school age children for kindergarten. \nWhat to expect: \nEach Little Learners session begins with a welcome song where each child is invited to dance and celebrate themselves. We sing interactive songs that encourage vocabulary development and gross motor movement\, then read a story together. After the first book\, we sing a few more songs and read another story. We conclude our time together with 3-4 craft and play centers that help children develop their early math\, literacy\, and motor skills. \nAfter story time\, families are encouraged to stay\, play\, and socialize in our Children’s Room. It’s a wonderful opportunity for children to make friends\, caregivers to connect\, and our library community to grow together. \nEssex Library programs are free and open to the public. \nRegistration is requested to ensure enough crafts are prepared. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Essex and the Revolution Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Cemetery walk as part of our America 250 celebrations! Join EHS Director\, Melissa Josefiak on Saturday\, October 3 at 5:00pm\, for a tour of the cemetery that will visit the gravesites of Essex veterans and residents connected to the Revolutionary War and talk about their histories before\, during\, and after the Revolution. \nLocated on the shores of the Connecticut River\, River View Cemetery testifies to the early history of “Potapaug\,” as Essex was once known\, with the oldest gravestones dating from the early 1700s.  Enjoy the cemetery’s beautiful grounds as we trace its history from a simple burial yard to the park-like setting of today\, especially during this twilight tour starting at 5pm.   \nThe tour lasts about an hour over uneven\, sloped\, grassy terrain for about half a mile.  Walkers should wear proper footwear and outerwear\, and possibly bring a flashlight if they would like.  While this tour is based on historical facts and is not intended to be ‘haunted’\, historical details about death\, war and disease may disturb young walkers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEach tour is $10 per person; free to EHS members.   Please meet at the base of the cemetery’s driveway. Limited parking is available in the cemetery or along North Main Street.  Ample parking is available next door at  31 North Main Street\, Essex. \nEHS expresses its gratitude to the Board of River View Cemetery for their support. \nIn case of inclement weather\, updated information will appear under the Events tab on EHS’s website\, Facebook and Instagram.  Interested volunteer guides are invited to learn the tour.  No experience necessary and all training is provided.

SUMMARY:In Gallery - Shrine Assemblage
DESCRIPTION:During this class participants will create three-dimensional artistic compositions made by combining various everyday objects\, scraps and/or materials such as wood\, metal\, cloth or paper into a unified whole. \nAssemblage is closely related to collage but extends into sculpture. It is a mixed media construction combining the artist’s creativity and the visual appeal of themed collections. \nYour collections mirror you and inspire you to create. Put on your “Bag Lady “garb and wherever you go let your creative instincts take over. As a mixed media artist\, you most likely have already been finding inspiration in 3-dimensional paraphernalia and cut up imagery. Assemblage creates a synchronicity between you and the objects you choose to use. It highlights transformation of your collections and “spotlights” a theme\, letting images and objects speak to the viewer. \nRegina Thomas’ collage and mixed media art is a mélange of visual stimuli\, colors\, and shapes involving different genres from the representational to the abstract.  These multi-layered works portray her view of the world\, never realistic\, injecting her own narratives\, metaphors\, and icons.  Regina works instinctually\, and her desire is to stimulate and intrigue the viewer\, make a connection\, bringing their own experiences to the work. \nRegina has lived and traveled throughout Asia and Europe.  While in London\, she attended Richmond University concentrating on the Art Disciplines as well as Studio classes.  Upon her return to the states she continued refining her art through classes and workshops at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design)\, The New Art Center in Newton – MA\, South Shore Art Center – MA\, West Hartford Art League\, Creative Arts Workshop/New Haven\, CT\, Yale University and The British Art Museum. \nRegina has been included in many juried exhibitions in New England. Thomas shows in private galleries and has private collectors across the U.S.\, Europe\, South America and Asia. Her most recent shows have been at The John Slade Ely House in New Haven\, and The Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook where she also holds classes in collage and mixed media art. \nDates: Wednesdays Sept. 23\, 30; Oct. 7\, 14\, 21

SUMMARY:Children's Art Program - Session 1\, Ages 7-11
DESCRIPTION:In this session the focus is on the Line……a moving point\, a dot that goes for a walk which can vary in length\, width\, direction and curvature. The alphabet is composed of lines so projects will include each child’s name and letters of the alphabet as a focus for designing an Egyptian Cartouche where children use the hieroglyphic alphabet to sketch the symbols that represent the letters or sounds of their names.  Their names will also be designed into a colorful drawing as they review color theory: primary\, secondary\, warm\, cool\, complimentary & tertiary colors. Using their knowledge of color theory and lines they will create an abstract crayon-resist watercolor painting connecting the letters of the alphabet. They’ll practice more line drawings as they learn to draw word art animals and finally design a poster with a short positive message and illustrations to help spotlight their message. \nSharon Lee Mullen-Reynolds knew in High School that she was to be an Art teacher.  That is exactly what she did; for 36 years she taught Visual Art in the city of New Haven.  Her career hi-light was teaching 22 years at the Betsy Ross Arts Magnet Middle School.  During her tenure there she was a published Fellow at Yale N.H.Teachers Institute for 2 years\, the  Department Chairperson for 8 years and creator of As Far As The Eye Can See a school-wide art exhibit. \nSince her retirement in 2016\, she has been attending numerous art exhibits and installations locally and in NYC\, specifically Frida Kahlo’s exhibit at the Brooklyn Art Museum which led her to create Frida- inspired floral headpieces. In 2017 she started The Kindness Rock art installation at the Branford Festival. \nSharon is an artist who believes that art can heal your soul.  In 2022 she sold her headpieces at the Ukrainian Roman Catholic church for the benefit of Ukraine’s War effort and donated 5 Ukrainian Strong “Petals for Peace” paintings to raise additional funds. These paintings were showcased on Channel 8 news. \nIn addition to her headpieces\, Sharon works in mixed-media\, crafts\, collage\, and watercolor landscape en plein air. Sharon’s artwork has been exhibited at City-Wide Open Studios\, The ARTS Council\, Calligraphers Guild\, and is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook\, Connecticut. \nRegistration must go through Park & Recreation \nTo register visit: Essex Park and Recreation \nDates: Wednesdays\, Sept. 16\, 23\, 30; October 7\, 14

DESCRIPTION:This class is designed for students with some experience using colored pencil and have basic concepts of botanical illustration. This course will focus on drawing a complete botanical study over the four-week session. Students will plan and draw each component of the study week by week resulting in a frame-able work of art. The teacher will provide the oversized paper\, tracing paper for sketches and the flower subject.
