DESCRIPTION:Do you have a passion for style? Do you fill your notebooks with clothing doodles and dream of seeing your own designs on the runway? Step into the shoes of a real designer in this immersive\, hands-on fashion illustration course! \nThis creative studio class guides you through the entire process of bringing fashion to life. SUMMARY:Modern Minimal: Exploring Analog Collage
DESCRIPTION:This art class welcomes participants of all skill levels who are interested in analog collage. The course introduces the fundamentals of collage\, focusing on minimalism and the use of a limited palette. Through guided exercises\, the class learns how to select and arrange images to create visually engaging compositions. Emphasis is placed on simplicity and balance to encourage creativity within constraints and foster an appreciation for a clean\, modern aesthetic. \nOver four studio sessions\, participants practice the essential methods of analog collage: selection of substrates\, cutting techniques\, adhesive applications\, color theory\, and composition.  Projects such as creating a master board\, starting and updating a studio notebook\, designing artist trading cards and finally creating a personal collage are designed to practice newly acquired skills and  encourage participants to develop their own unique modern aesthetic. Small supply list available upon registration. \nMolly Waite Lund is an analog collage artist who lives in Essex\, Connecticut.  As a self-taught artist\, Lund is continuously experimenting with color\, shape\, relationships\, and negative space.  She is compelled to repurpose vintage papers as a reminder of the history that has shaped her life. In her collages\, the world that Lund imagines is a place where the familiar becomes unfamiliar\, and the impossible becomes ordinary. \nLund is active in the online collage community\, frequently joining challenges to create collages around themes or prompts.  These interactions have resulted in Lund’s work being selected for publication in books\, magazines\, and on a deck of cards; for inclusion in national and international public displays of collage works; and exhibition at local art galleries in Connecticut and New York. Lund’s work was also displayed in a solo show at South of Main Art Collective during June\, July\, and August 2022. Her work is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook\, Connecticut.

SUMMARY:Food Group: The Toast of the Town (Ages 4+)
DESCRIPTION:Program designed around The Food Group book series by Jory John\, written for an audience age 4-8. Kids ages 4-12 are welcome to join\, and for safety reasons\, kids ages 4-8 must have an adult participate alongside! \nThis summer’s popular Food Group program is BACK for the release of Jory John’s newest Food Group book\, The Toast of the Town! \nMeet Toast. He knows everybody\, and everybody knows him. He pops up wherever help is needed—shoveling sidewalks\, welcoming newcomers\, checking in on neighbors—just because. But Toast wasn’t always so warm and toasty. In his younger days\, he kept to himself\, loafed around\, and mostly just felt a little . . . stale. It took one life-changing moment to help him rise to the occasion. Can one ordinary piece of toast transform an entire community? And can helping others turn out to be the best thing since sliced bread? \nWhat to expect: \nCook\, read\, and explore with us in this deliciously fun program inspired by Jory John’s Food Group series. This program will combine stories with simple snack-making. We’ll kick things off by washing hands and learning a few basic food safety tips\, because every great chef starts with good habits. Then\, we’ll introduce the day’s featured book\, and participants will create a themed snack inspired by the story. While our creations bake\, chill\, or come together\, we’ll gather for an interactive read-aloud of the book. Once everything is ready\, participants can enjoy their snack and can take home a recipe card to try again at home! \nPossible Allergens: recipe contains white bread\, milk\, & food coloring. \nEssex Library programs are free and open to the public. \nRegistration is required as space is limited. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Houseplants: Fears and Favorites with Essex Library Association
DESCRIPTION:Incorporating healthy indoor plants in a home or office can really add a sense of calm and beauty to a space. A big part of growing houseplants successfully comes from choosing the right plant for your space. We’ll talk about light conditions\, temperature\, watering requirements and how to consider these factors when it comes to plant selection. Stories of houseplant failures\, unexpected triumphs and new favorites will be covered. This talk will be presented by Felicia Millett\, a plant scientist with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. \nRegister online at youresseslibrary.org or call the Library at 860-767-1560.
