SUMMARY:Introduction to Painting with Gouache
DESCRIPTION:This course focuses on gouache skills and techniques such as water to paint ratios\, color mixing\, shading and gradients\, brush control including dry bushing\, layering and glazing techniques and how to stay vibrant not muddy using this medium.  Work on a painting on illustration board of a subject of your choice. Paint with joy and not frustration. Supply list available upon registration. \nSandra Garofalo is a painter and illustrator whose talents shine through a variety of mediums\, with a primary focus on acrylics\, gouache\, photography and glass—both hot and cold. \nShe began her artistic journey illustrating for Spotlight\, Motorboat\, and International Yacht magazines. During this time her love for depicting fish and shorebirds truly began to blossom. Later\, she pursued a teaching career in advertising\, art\, and digital design. After retiring\, she moved to her current home in Connecticut. \nSpending quality time in Southwest Florida\, Sandra’s inspiration flourished into a vivid explosion of color and creativity. Surrounded by exotic wildlife in their lush habitats\, she found herself constantly flooded with imagery that sparked emotional\, expressive artwork. \n“The vibrant variation of color on the fish and other wildlife — as well as their\n               surroundings —is more than exciting to capture in paint\,” she says. \nSandra earned her BFA from the University of Hartford Art School and went on to receive a National Bennie Award for logo design\, the Chase Paper Merit Award for Printing Techniques\, and has exhibited her work in numerous juried shows.  She also built a successful freelance graphic design career\, working with clients such as Revlon\, Bayer Pharmaceuticals\, Endurance Reinsurance\, IBM\, and The Hampton Designer Showhouse\, to name a few. \nNow fully retired\, Sandra devotes her time to creating commissioned pieces\, animal portraits\, and using photography as a tool to capture the natural world that continues to inspire her artwork. She presently shows her work at Spectrum Art Gallery where she also teaches. \nDates: Fridays\, Sept. 18\, 25; Oct.  9\, 16\, 23

SUMMARY:Children's Art Program - Session 1\, Ages 7-11
DESCRIPTION:In this session the focus is on the Line……a moving point\, a dot that goes for a walk which can vary in length\, width\, direction and curvature. The alphabet is composed of lines so projects will include each child’s name and letters of the alphabet as a focus for designing an Egyptian Cartouche where children use the hieroglyphic alphabet to sketch the symbols that represent the letters or sounds of their names.  Their names will also be designed into a colorful drawing as they review color theory: primary\, secondary\, warm\, cool\, complimentary & tertiary colors. Using their knowledge of color theory and lines they will create an abstract crayon-resist watercolor painting connecting the letters of the alphabet. They’ll practice more line drawings as they learn to draw word art animals and finally design a poster with a short positive message and illustrations to help spotlight their message. \nSharon Lee Mullen-Reynolds knew in High School that she was to be an Art teacher.  That is exactly what she did; for 36 years she taught Visual Art in the city of New Haven.  Her career hi-light was teaching 22 years at the Betsy Ross Arts Magnet Middle School.  During her tenure there she was a published Fellow at Yale N.H.Teachers Institute for 2 years\, the  Department Chairperson for 8 years and creator of As Far As The Eye Can See a school-wide art exhibit. \nSince her retirement in 2016\, she has been attending numerous art exhibits and installations locally and in NYC\, specifically Frida Kahlo’s exhibit at the Brooklyn Art Museum which led her to create Frida- inspired floral headpieces. In 2017 she started The Kindness Rock art installation at the Branford Festival. \nSharon is an artist who believes that art can heal your soul.  In 2022 she sold her headpieces at the Ukrainian Roman Catholic church for the benefit of Ukraine’s War effort and donated 5 Ukrainian Strong “Petals for Peace” paintings to raise additional funds. These paintings were showcased on Channel 8 news. \nIn addition to her headpieces\, Sharon works in mixed-media\, crafts\, collage\, and watercolor landscape en plein air. Sharon’s artwork has been exhibited at City-Wide Open Studios\, The ARTS Council\, Calligraphers Guild\, and is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook\, Connecticut. \nRegistration must go through Park & Recreation \nTo register visit: Essex Park and Recreation \nDates: Wednesdays\, Sept. 16\, 23\, 30; October 7\, 14

DESCRIPTION:Program for kids ages 2-5. \nCelebrate our furry\, feathered\, and scaly friends with pet-themed stories\, songs\, and activities that are perfect for young animal lovers! \nJoin us for themed stories\, songs\, rhymes\, and crafts! We’ll learn early literacy concepts like colors\, shapes\, opposites\, the ABCs and much more\, to prepare our pre-school age children for kindergarten. \nWhat to expect: \nEach Little Learners session begins with a welcome song where each child is invited to dance and celebrate themselves. We sing interactive songs that encourage vocabulary development and gross motor movement\, then read a story together. After the first book\, we sing a few more songs and read another story. We conclude our time together with 3-4 craft and play centers that help children develop their early math\, literacy\, and motor skills. \nAfter story time\, families are encouraged to stay\, play\, and socialize in our Children’s Room. It’s a wonderful opportunity for children to make friends\, caregivers to connect\, and our library community to grow together. \nEssex Library programs are free and open to the public. \nRegistration is requested to ensure enough crafts are prepared.\nClick here to register.
