  • “Life in Motion” Opening Reception

    The first show of the new year at Spectrum Gallery is "Life in Motion". The opening reception is Friday, January 24, 2025 from 6:30 - 9 pm. This is a free event and open to all. Join us for wine, food and good company. The Open House Weekend is Saturday, January 23 (1-6pm) and Sunday, January 24 (1-5pm). The 6-week show will close March 8, 2025. The Gallery will have images of people or objects in motion. Questions to think about what does motion do to a person or object? What stops it? What makes motion accelerate? What can make motion dangerous? What makes motion beautiful and exciting! Regular Hours: Wed - Sat, 12- 6pm, and Sunday 12-5pm.

Come see almost 70 pieces of artwork selected by juror Kara Gillam that are showcased and available for purchase. Free admission, and light refreshments will be served. Running concurrently in the Gantner Gallery will be a special solo exhibition honoring the late Ralph Levesque; an elected artist, former board member, and beloved member of the Essex Art Association. This tribute showcases a selection of Ralph’s work and reflects the lasting impact of his vision, artistry, and commitment to the local art community. Congratulations to the award winners!   • EAA Summer Juried Show Opening Reception

    You’re invited! Please join us this Friday at 6 PM for the Opening Reception of the EAA Summer Juried Show! Running concurrently in the Gantner Gallery will be a special solo exhibition by artist Alexa MacCrady. Congratulations to the award winners! For the first time ever at EAA, we’re excited to present a unique fusion of visual art and poetry: Ekphrastic poetry readings by EAA artists — debuting at the opening reception! These original poems, inspired by artwork in the show, offer a powerful literary reflection on the visual experience. Ekphrastic poetry is an ancient tradition — poetry written in response to visual art — and we’re thrilled to bring it to life in our gallery! The poems were created in a special workshop led by the insightful and multitalented Edward Lent, who is the President of the Ekphrastic Poetry Trust, Poet Laureate of Madison and EAA member. His thoughtful guidance sparked meaningful connections between image and word by EAA artists. Poetry readings begin at 7 PM, followed by the award presentation. Free admission, light refreshments, and a night of multi-sensory creativity await at 10 North Main Street, Essex.   • EHS Collections at the Library: Game Night

    Please stop by and see EHS's new exhibit at Essex Library. "Game Night!" has been curated by EHS Director, Melissa Josefiak, and the Collections team. Items and photos in the exhibit are all part of EHS collections, and will be on display through March. As part of EHS’s continuing efforts to share our collections objects with the community, we are presenting quarterly exhibits in cases at the Essex Library (33 West Ave.). These objects will be available to view during the Library’s regular hours operation. Essex Historical Society (EHS) stewards over 7,000 objects spanning 10,000 years of history, representing the villages of Centerbrook, Essex and Ivoryton.  While the majority of EHS’s collections arrive through private donations, some objects arrive as discoveries, unearthed from surprising places.  In a few cases, their journey is more interesting than the stories they tell. The Essex Library collections cases will rotate out again in April, so please visit the cases to see the current showcased items.

  • History and Uses of Witch Hazel: The Plant that Shaped Essex

    Join EHS and House of the Triple Moon for a special America 250 program exploring witch hazel, a native plant that helped shape Essex. Indigenous to Connecticut, witch hazel was long used by Native communities, who developed the practice of steeping its twigs and leaves to create a mild astringent. Colonial settlers in Potapaug (now Essex) quickly adopted this remedy, and it became a household staple. Readily available and often found growing close to home, witch hazel was blended into oils, poultices, and salves and served as a trusted treatment for many everyday ailments.   Although widely used, witch hazel was difficult to sell commercially due to its short shelf life—until the 1860s, when a doctor in Essex discovered that adding alcohol preserved the witch hazel extract. By 1875 innovations in the production of witch hazel distilling, made Essex the capital of the industry. For the next 100 years, E.E. Dickinson & Co  transformed a local product into an international commodity—firmly securing Essex’s place in this remarkable story.     During America’s 250th year, Essex Historical Society is excited to bring the community a number of special programs to mark this historic occasion. We are especially thrilled to partner with the Griswold Inn for a featured event, as 2026 also marks the Gris’s 250th year in business — a remarkable milestone for one of the nation’s oldest continuously operating inns. Taverns in early Connecticut were far more than just places to drink. For travelers and locals alike, they served as hubs of entertainment, news, gossip, good food, and overnight lodging. Taverns were an essential part of every Connecticut town and played a vital role in social and civic life. Join the Essex Historical Society (EHS) and the Griswold Inn (the Gris) for this special program from the Connecticut Museum of History and Culture exploring the rich history of tavern life in early Connecticut.     For the 10th year, the Connecticut Spring Boat Show returns to historic Essex, uniting boaters, builders, and marine businesses along the Connecticut River—set within a town celebrating 250 years and honoring the past, present, and future of boating.  Please click for tickets:  https://www.windcheckmagazine.com/shop/ The 2025 Show featured 70 boats on display and over 50 exhibitors. Together with our sponsors and 2,000+ attendees, we raised over $17,000 for Sails Up 4 Cancer. While weather dampened some of the action planned for the five bands on the docket, 2026 promises even more—with expanded performance and exhibit areas and an even larger lineup of boats. This is a rain or shine event. Children 13 and under are free when accompanied by a paid adult; please be sure to select a Children’s ticket when purchasing online. Each ticket/bracelet provides entrance for all three days.
