SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Jodi Picoult "Wordsmith and Wonder"
DESCRIPTION:Step into Spring with us as we chat with the highly acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult about her newest novel\, By Any Other Name. \nRegister HERE. \nIn 1581\, Emilia Bassano—like most young women of her day—is allowed no voice of her own. But as the Lord Chamberlain’s mistress\, she has access to all theaters in England and finds a way to secretly bring her work to the stage. And yet\, creating some of the world’s greatest dramatic masterpieces comes at great cost: by paying a man for the use of his name\, she will write her own out of history. \nIn the present\, playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. Although the challenges are different four hundred years later\, the playing field is still not level for women in theater. Would Melina—like Emilia—be willing to forfeit her credit as author\, just for a chance to see her work performed? \nTold in intertwining narratives\, By Any Other Name is a sweeping tale of ambition\, courage\, and desire that asks what price each woman is willing to pay to see their work live on—even if it means they will be forgotten. Register now to join the wondrous conversation! \nAbout the Author: Jodi Picoult is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of twenty-nine novels\, including By Any Other Name\, Mad Honey (co-authored with Jennifer Finney Boylan)\, Wish You Were Here\, The Book of Two Ways\, A Spark of Light\, Small Great Things\, Leaving Time\, and My Sister’s Keeper\, and\, with daughter Samantha van Leer\, two young adult novels\, Between the Lines and Off the Page. She lives in New Hampshire with her husband.

SUMMARY:Yale Scholars Present: "From Minds to Molecules\, How We Age"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation from Yale Science Graduate Students as they explore how our minds and bodies change on different scales during our lifetimes in a talk entitled\, “From Minds to Molecules: Exploring Human Development over Scale and Time.” \nMaisha Hossain will explore how infants’ brains become socialized into little minds as they grow\, from a set of cells to a whole brain buzzing with information and ideas. Kerry Larkin will explore how cells coordinate and change to form the different tissues and organs of the body\, and how this understanding can help us learn about features of cancer cells. Devin Juros will discuss how our cells age as we age\, accumulating changes to their metabolism and protein production which can eventually break down entire bodily systems. \nThis program is FREE and open to the public at 33 West Avenue\, Essex\, CT.

SUMMARY:Nutmeg Book Club (Gr. 4-6)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Nutmeg Book Club\, a group celebrating Connecticut’s own kid’s book award\, for kids in grades 4-6!\nBooks are available for pickup starting February 4 with a special Nutmeg Book Club Kit that includes activities\, stickers\, bookmarks\, and other goodies related to the book! \nThis month we are reading Wayward Creatures by Dayna Lorentz. Read the book on your own and then join us at the library for a fun discussion and related activity. Our meeting is on February 28 from 4-5 PM. \nNutmeg nominees are chosen by a committee of school media specialists\, public librarians\, and reading teachers\, as well as a small selection of student representatives in the appropriate age range for that reading material. Each spring\, students are allowed to cast their votes for the nominee they think should win the Nutmeg Award. \nCriteria includes the age of the book\, and require that the books be well-written\, with strong characterization\, vivid setting\, striking language\, a well-constructed plot\, and plausible conclusion. Nutmeg nominees may cover sensitive topics. For more information about how nutmeg books are selected\, please see https://www.nutmegaward.org/about/faqs \nAbout the Book: \nTwelve-year-old Gabe doesn’t know where he belongs anymore. His family is caught up in their own lives and his friends barely have time for him now that they’re stars on the soccer team. In a desperate plea for attention to impress his friends after school\, Gabe sets off fireworks in the woods near his house and causes a small forest fire that destroys several acres of land. \nIn the chaos of the destruction\, a coyote named Rill—tired of her family and longing for adventure—finds herself far from home. Already on animal control’s watch for wandering into a backyard and snapping at a child\, Rill crawls into a cave\, where she nurses her wounds alone. \nGabe and Rill’s paths irrevocably cross when Gabe is tasked with cleaning up the forest through the court’s restorative justice program. The damage to the land and both their lives is beyond what the two can imagine. But together\, they discover that sometimes it only takes one friend to find the place where you belong. \nEssex Library programs are free and open to the public.\nRegistration is required.
