SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Rachelle Bergstein on "How Judy Blume Rewrote Childhood"
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to an online intimate conversation with bestselling author Rachelle Bergstein as she chats about her newest book The Genius of Judy. This book takes an expansive look at Judy Blume’s life\, work\, and cultural impact\, focusing on her most iconic—and controversial—young adult novels\, from Are You There God? It’s Me\, Margaret to Blubber. \nRegister HERE. \nEveryone knows Judy Blume. \nHer books have garnered her fans of all ages for decades and sold tens of millions of copies. But why were people so drawn to them? And why are we still talking about them now in the 21st century? \nIn The Genius of Judy\, her remarkable story is revealed as never before\, beginning with her as a mother of two searching for purpose outside of her home in 1960s suburban New Jersey. The books she wrote starred regular children with genuine thoughts and problems. But behind those deceptively simple tales\, Blume explored the pillars of the growing women’s rights movement\, in which girls and women were entitled to careers\, bodily autonomy\, fulfilling relationships\, and even sexual pleasure. Blume wasn’t trying to be a revolutionary—she just wanted to tell honest stories—but in doing so\, she created a cohesive\, culture-altering vision of modern adolescence. \nBlume’s bravery provoked backlash\, making her the country’s most-banned author in the mid-1980s. Thankfully\, her works withstood those culture wars and it’s no coincidence that Blume has resurfaced as a cultural touchstone now. Young girls are still cat-called\, sex education curricula are getting dismissed as pornography\, and entire shelves of libraries are being banned. As we face these challenges\, it’s only natural we look to Blume\, the grand dame of so-called dirty books. This is the story of how a housewife became a groundbreaking artist\, and how generations of empowered fans are her legacy\, today more than ever. \nRegister now for a conversation you don’t want to miss! \nAbout the Author: Rachelle Bergstein is a lifestyle writer\, author\, and editor\, focused on style\, pop culture\, and families. Her work has appeared in the New York Post\, The New York Times\, NPR\, and more. She is the author of three books: Women from the Ankle Down\, Brilliance and Fire\, and The Genius of Judy. She lives with her husband and son in Brooklyn. \nView the book in our catalog HERE.\nWatch past author talks HERE.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Chris Whipple\, "Uncharted"
DESCRIPTION:New York Times and Emmy Award-winning author Chris Whipple will be at Essex Library to discuss his book\, “Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden\, Harris\, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History.” In “Uncharted\,” Whipple draws on his exclusive access to sources on both sides of the aisle and takes readers behind the scenes of headline-making news to reveal insights on Joe Biden’s presidential debate performance as well as the campaigns of both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. \nThis program is FREE and open to ALL at Essex Library\, 33 West Avenue\, Essex\, CT 06426. Registration is required. Register by calling the library at 860-767-1560. \nABOUT CHRIS WHIPPLE\nChris Whipple is a New York Times bestselling author and widely acclaimed documentary filmmaker\, speaker\, and a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning journalist. He appears throughout the media and contributes to the New York Times and Washington Post\, and has written for Vanity Fair\, Politico\, and the Daily Beast\, among others. He lives in New York City with his wife Cary. \nABOUT “UNCHARTED”\nA disastrous debate\, a would-be assassin’s bullet\, an electrifying eleventh hour candidate swap\, dramatic and surprising VP selections\, betrayals behind closed doors\, charges of a stolen election\, game-changing blunders—the history-making 2024 presidential election is a political saga of Shakespearean proportions. In minute-by-minute detail\, esteemed White House historian and political analyst Chris Whipple chronicles the unprecedented drama as it unfolds\, documenting the true story of the Harris and Trump campaigns and the difficult\, urgent decisions made in the back rooms of power\, with the future of American democracy at stake. \nAlternating between the Biden/Harris/Walz and the Trump/Vance camps\, Whipple tells the fly-on-the-wall story of campaign 2024\, drawing on his unique access to exclusive sources on both sides\, including conversations with members of the candidates’ inner circles. Whipple goes behind the scenes of every headline-making moment to reveal how a post-debate intra-party rebellion forced Biden to step aside\, how the nomination of Vice President Harris at a thrilling convention reshaped the race\, how Harris rallied excited voters across generations and demographics\, but ultimately could not overcome the underlying weaknesses of her campaign. Whipple also burrows inside Donald Trump’s campaign to reveal startling new insights into how he overcame primary opponents and multiple prosecutions\, rebranded his base to appeal to Gen Z voters\, and forged powerful alliances with Silicon Valley CEOs like Elon Musk. \nAn intimate portrait of American politics on the edge\, filled with previously untold stories\, anecdotes\, and insights\, Uncharted is the authoritative account of this pivotal chapter in American politics. As he brings to life the most dramatic and important presidential campaign of the modern age and puts it into historical perspective\, Whipple exposes how ambition\, conviction\, and resilience collide at the highest echelons of power\, offering a deeper understanding of the forces that define a divided nation.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: Gregg Hurwitz "The Thrill of Writing Action\, Adventure\, and Suspense"
DESCRIPTION:Do you love action-packed adventure? Are you ready for the thrill? You’re invited to a riveting conversation with New York Times bestselling author Gregg Hurwitz as he chats with us about his Orphan X series and his life as a writer of suspenseful storytelling. \nRegister HERE.  \nOrphan X\, the series opener\, introduces the world to the Nowhere Man. He is a legendary figure spoken about only in whispers. It’s said that when he’s reached by the truly desperate and deserving\, the Nowhere Man can and will do anything to protect and save them. \nBut he’s not merely a legend. \nEvan Smoak is a man with skills\, resources\, and a personal mission to help those with nowhere else to turn. He’s also a man with a dangerous past. Taken from a group home at twelve\, Evan was raised and trained as part of the Orphan Program\, an off-the-books operation designed to create deniable intelligence assets—i.e. assassins. Evan was Orphan X. He broke with the Program\, using everything he learned to disappear and reinvent himself as the Nowhere Man. \nNow ten books in\, fans cannot get enough of the Orphan X world and Hurwitz can’t wait to tell us all about it. Register now for a conversation you just cannot miss!
