  • Pratt House Volunteer Kick Off and Training

    Pratt House 19 West Avenue, Essex, CT, United States

    Essex Historical Society (EHS) seeks friendly, responsible Guides and Hosts for the summer tour season at Pratt House: the only historic house museum in Essex.  The well-preserved, uniquely-asymmetrical Pratt House served the same family for more than 200 years, many of them sharing in the family blacksmith business.   The house is open Saturdays and Sundays, June through September from 1:00-4:00 pm, with occasional additional programs throughout the summer. Volunteers lead tours and/or act as hosts at Pratt House. Guides lead small groups of visitors on tours through the colonial home. Hosts greet guests, share information about rotating exhibits, and operate Pratt’s Provisions Gift Shop. Training will be provided for both positions.  This is an exciting opportunity to work with like-minded people, make new friends, and discover new things about our town. Join EHS in our mission to engage and inspire the community in the three villages!   • 5-Week Beginner Italian Class for Adults

    Have you ever wanted to learn Italian? Essex Library presents a 5-week Italian language class for adult beginners that will be led by Middletown Adult Education Instructor Mary Saraceno. Saraceno lived and studied in Sicily for 12 years and has taught Italian since 1994. Participants are encouraged to sign up for all five sessions (March 16, 23, 30 & April 6, 13 at 10:30 AM) where they will learn practical vocabulary and expressions to understand real travel situations and cultural differences.     Days are spent working with professional designers and seamstresses on two projects. The first is sketching, designing and sewing a re-fashion of a pair of jeans into a unique skirt. The second project is learning to read, pin and cut a commercial pattern of your choice. You will then machine sew and finish your garment adding accessories for the end of the week fashion show. Professional hair and makeup stylists help prepare you for your photo shoot and fashion show. No previous sewing or drawing experience necessary for Fashion Week.     To all Corps who were to attend the Burning of the Ships Commemoration that was scheduled for this Saturday May 9th. It is with deep regret that we have decided to cancel the Commemoration parade and lunch this Saturday due to the forecast of rain throughout the day. We will not be meeting at the town hall as mentioned in previous email. As you all know there is a lot of time, effort and money that goes into running an event like this and we are very sorry we will not be holding it. Thank you all for your willingness to make this event special to the Town of Essex. We appreciate you and look forward to seeing you at the musters this year and at next year’s Burning of the Ships.
