Essex Lions Club
The Essex Lions club has been serving the communities of Essex, Centerbrook and Ivoryton since 1950. More recently the Essex Lions merged with the Westbrook Lions Club and are now providing services to the town of Westbrook as well. The services provided are based on the needs of the community and are constantly changing ranging from providing eye exams and glasses to persons that cannot afford it to doing yard work, giving rides to Dr.’s appointments, building and maintaining park buildings, donations to food banks, Christmas gifts to needy families, disaster assistance and scholarships. Essex Lions also contributes to Lions Clubs International Foundation which funds grants, many of which have come back to Connecticut such as assistance for families affected by SuperStorm Sandy. More recently we have started doing Pre-school eye screenings which provide early diagnosis for eye diseases which later are many times misinterpreted as learning disabilities. One of our largest fundraisers is our Annual Lobster Bake. The Lobster Bake is held the 1st Saturday in August every year at the Essex Town Park. This is a huge community event in which hundreds of people reserved their tickets months ahead of time. We typically serve 500-700 people each year bringing all those consumers to downtown Essex. The many hours of volunteer labor by the members of the club allow us to provide numerous services back to the community.
