On Account of Sex: A History of Women’s Suffrage in America

On August 18, 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution was officially adopted, guaranteeing that American women would no longer be denied the right to vote, “on account of sex.” From Seneca Falls to suffragettes, Supreme Court cases to hunger strikes, this lecture at the Essex Library on Monday, March 16 at 7 p.m., will chronicle the long and complex history of the fight for women’s suffrage in the United States.
Amanda Goodheart Parks is a public historian specializing in the study of women and gender. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and has worked as a historian, museum educator, and historical interpreter at museums and historical sites throughout southern New England.
