The Art of Gaman with Nancy Beck (Virtual)

Nancy Beck will present a talk on “The Art of Gaman,” during which she will present objects and arts and crafts made by Japanese Americans in U.S. internment camps during World War II. She will also show footage from the 2011 documentary, Art of Gaman, in which Delphine Hirasuna, author of the book “Art of Gaman” discusses the Japanese internment camps and gaman. Beck will show many of the objects made from scraps and found materials in the camps that internees created to help beautify their surroundings. The objects are the manifestation of what many describe as the art of gaman, a Japanese word that means to bear the seemingly unbearable with dignity and patience. This program is FREE and open to ALL. Registration is required for this virtual program. About Nancy Beck  Nancy Beck is Secretary and Treasurer of the Japan Society of Fairfield County (JSFC).  She is a third-generation Japanese American (sansei).  Her mother and many other relatives were incarcerated during World War II because of their Japanese ethnicity.  Ms. Beck is a graduate of the University of Chicago.

Growing Mountain Laurels

Felicia Millet, a plant diagnostician with the Department of Plant Pathology and Ecology at The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, will be onsite at Essex Library to present “Growing Mountain Laurels in Connecticut.” Mountain Laurel was named the state flower of Connecticut in 1907 and has continued to captivate residents ever since. This presentation will include a discussion of the history of these native plants, cultivar descriptions, tips on planting, as well as which pests and diseases to look out for. River Tales: The Rhythm of the Rain

Swing by the Connecticut River Museum for take-home craft activities that engage kids with the Connecticut River’s stunning wildlife and rich history! Crafts will take place in the Museum’s Boathouse. A program just for kids 4+ and their caregivers, River Tales includes a story and craft activity themed around nature.  Non-members: $3 per learner, Members: FREE! As rain starts to fall, Isaac empties his little jar of water into a pool. Water races the sparkling streams as they tumble over waterfalls, rush through swollen rivers and burst out into the vast open sea. In June, we’ll read The Rhythm of the Rain, a picture book from Greenaway medal-winner, Grahame Baker-Smith that celebrates the water cycle and captures the remarkable movement of water across the earth in all its majesty. In this evolving yoga series, yogis will learn valuable breathing and movement sequences that will connect their mind and body.  Each class will include breathing and meditation to prepare the mind as well as deep stretching appropriate for all levels and just a hint of strength work to help keep bodies healthy and agile. Modifications will be provided for anyone that needs them. The library has a limited supply of yoga mats; we suggest bringing your own. This program is FREE and open to ALL at Essex Library, 33 West Avenue, Essex, CT. No registration necessary, drop in! About Hannah ClarK:  Hannah is a graduate of Valley Regional High School and is a local teacher. She recently participated in a 200-hour yoga training workshop in Bali, Indonesia. Hannah is joyful to offer the local community a safe space to practice yoga as well as to ask any questions they may have about the philosophy of the practice and how it relates to the body. She will focus her teachings, in this series, on meditative slow flow vinyasa.

RiverQuest Kid’s Cruise

On select Saturday mornings at 10:00 am, we offer a special cruise, designed for young children and their parents, grandparents, etc., aboard RiverQuest. On this cruise, we will show young children how to use binoculars, teach them about the birds we see, nautical terms, river ecology, and other points of interest. This is a fun cruise to introduce young children to the fragile beauty of the Connecticut River and it allows kids to be kids!
