During this class participants will create three-dimensional artistic compositions made by combining various everyday objects, scraps and/or materials such as wood, metal, cloth or paper into a unified whole. Assemblage is closely related to collage but extends into sculpture. It is a mixed media construction combining the artist’s creativity and the visual appeal of themed collections. Your collections mirror you and inspire you to create. Put on your “Bag Lady “garb and wherever you go let your creative instincts take over. As a mixed media artist, you most likely have already been finding inspiration in 3-dimensional paraphernalia and cut up imagery. It highlights transformation of your collections and “spotlights” a theme, letting images and objects speak to the viewer. In this session the focus is on the Line……a moving point, a dot that goes for a walk which can vary in length, width, direction and curvature. The alphabet is composed of lines so projects will include each child’s name and letters of the alphabet as a focus for designing an Egyptian Cartouche where children use the hieroglyphic alphabet to sketch the symbols that represent the letters or sounds of their names. Their names will also be designed into a colorful drawing as they review color theory: primary, secondary, warm, cool, complimentary & tertiary colors. Using their knowledge of color theory and lines they will create an abstract crayon-resist watercolor painting connecting the letters of the alphabet. They’ll practice more line drawings as they learn to draw word art animals and finally design a poster with a short positive message and illustrations to help spotlight their message. Later, she pursued a teaching career in advertising, art, and digital design. After retiring, she moved to her current home in Connecticut. Spending quality time in Southwest Florida, Sandra’s inspiration flourished into a vivid explosion of color and creativity. Surrounded by exotic wildlife in their lush habitats, she found herself constantly flooded with imagery that sparked emotional, expressive artwork. “The vibrant variation of color on the fish and other wildlife — as well as their surroundings —is more than exciting to capture in paint,” she says. There’s nothing like working on classic still-life set ups to sharpen your drawing skills. Drawing is necessary to pursue other mediums such as painting which begins with a drawing. In this class demos will be given to help you learn to keep your early pencil marks soft and faint and break items down into simple 2D shapes like circles, squares and triangles. You will learn to use different line weights such as thick and thin, dark and light to show what is close and what is far. To show volume and value you’ll observe where the light hits your subject and where the shadows fall. Demos will show how to add depth and volume to your drawing using hatching, cross-hatching, stippling and blending to achieve smooth transitions from dark to light. Finally adding details such as patterns, textures and accents to your piece. All of these skills will help you draw what you see not what you think you see. Short material list available upon registration. Born in New York city to artist parents, Lisa Arnold has been involved in art most of her life. Her interests have been wide as she has explored many venues in the art world. […]

Kids and families are invited to join the Ivoryton Library in celebrating National Fall Foliage Week by crafting with the beautiful nature all around us!
This fall, Sustainable Essex will sponsor a “Do One Thing!” initiative in our community to raise awareness and celebrate the sustainable activities that businesses, local organizations, schools, and individuals are doing. Sustainable Essex will hold SEED presentations (Sustainable Essex Environmental Discussions) at the Ivoryton Library. Topics will include: Sustainable Lawn Care; Alternative Methods of Transportation & Travel; Basics of Composting; Reducing waste workshop for children and parents, ages 4 and up. Sustainable Essex is asking all local businesses and organizations that would like to participate in this campaign to have some type of tree - paper, cardboard, 3-D, real branches, etc. in a visible place. We will provide paper leaves for customers/clients to write one thing they are doing to help our environment (i.e., recycling thin film plastic, using an electric leaf blower, carpooling, stopping the use of plastic water bottles, etc.) to attach to the tree. Each business and organization can choose how they would like to showcase this. Our libraries, schools, and town hall will also be involved. Any questions? Please contact karenevansmail@gmail.com

Program for kids ages birth-3 and their caregivers. A play-based music and movement story time for young children and their caregivers! At Essex Library, we are committed to providing high-quality story time experiences that foster early literacy, social-emotional growth, and a lifelong love of learning. What to expect: Each Wiggle Worms session begins with a welcome song where children (or caregivers) are invited to introduce themselves (or their little one), helping build confidence. We sing interactive songs that encourage vocabulary development and gross motor movement, then share a story together while modeling early literacy skills by pointing to words, turning pages, and engaging with the book. After the first book, we play and sing with interactive toys such as shakers, scarves, and rhythm sticks before we wrap up with one final story and a goodbye song. After story time, families are encouraged to stay, play, and socialize in our Children's Room. It's a wonderful opportunity for children to make friends, caregivers to connect, and our library community to grow together. This story time will take place every Tuesday morning. Due to space, Please choose 1 session per day to attend. Essex Library programs are free and open to the public. […]

Sharon Lee Mullen-Reynolds knew in High School that she was to be an Art teacher. That is exactly what she did; for 36 years she taught Visual Art in the city of New Haven. Spectrum Art Gallery and Artisans Store presents its annual Focus on Fall exhibition, which opened on September 18 and will continue through Saturday, November 7. The annual autumn exhibit brings together fine art and handcrafted work inspired by the colors, textures, atmosphere, and natural transformations of the fall in New England. Assemblage creates a synchronicity between you and the objects you choose to use. It highlights transformation of your collections and “spotlights” a theme, letting images and objects speak to the viewer. Regina Thomas’ collage and mixed media art is a mélange of visual stimuli, colors, and shapes involving different genres from the representational to the abstract. These multi-layered works portray her view of the world, never realistic, injecting her own narratives, metaphors, and icons. Regina works instinctually, and her desire is to stimulate and intrigue the viewer, make a connection, bringing their own experiences to the work. Regina has […]
