  • Essex and the Revolution Walking Tour

River View Cemetery 31 North Main Street, Essex, CT, United States

Join us for a special Cemetery walk as part of our America 250 celebrations! Join EHS Director, Melissa Josefiak on Saturday, October 3 at 5:00pm, for a tour of the cemetery that will visit the gravesites of Essex veterans and residents connected to the Revolutionary War and talk about their histories before, during, and after the Revolution. Located on the shores of the Connecticut River, River View Cemetery testifies to the early history of “Potapaug,” as Essex was once known, with the oldest gravestones dating from the early 1700s.  Enjoy the cemetery’s beautiful grounds as we trace its history from a simple burial yard to the park-like setting of today, especially during this twilight tour starting at 5pm.   The tour lasts about an hour over uneven, sloped, grassy terrain for about half a mile.  Walkers should wear proper footwear and outerwear, and possibly bring a flashlight if they would like.  While this tour is based on historical facts and is not intended to be ‘haunted’, historical details about death, war and disease may disturb young walkers. Register! Each tour is $10 per person; free to EHS members.   Please meet at the base of the cemetery’s driveway. Limited parking […]

  • In Gallery – Shrine Assemblage

    Recurring
Spectrum Art Gallery/Arts Center Killingworth 61 Main Street, Centerbrook, CT, United States

During this class participants will create three-dimensional artistic compositions made by combining various everyday objects, scraps and/or materials such as wood, metal, cloth or paper into a unified whole. Assemblage is closely related to collage but extends into sculpture. It is a mixed media construction combining the artist’s creativity and the visual appeal of themed collections. Your collections mirror you and inspire you to create. Put on your “Bag Lady “garb and wherever you go let your creative instincts take over. As a mixed media artist, you most likely have already been finding inspiration in 3-dimensional paraphernalia and cut up imagery. Assemblage creates a synchronicity between you and the objects you choose to use. It highlights transformation of your collections and “spotlights” a theme, letting images and objects speak to the viewer. Regina Thomas’ collage and mixed media art is a mélange of visual stimuli, colors, and shapes involving different genres from the representational to the abstract.  These multi-layered works portray her view of the world, never realistic, injecting her own narratives, metaphors, and icons.  Regina works instinctually, and her desire is to stimulate and intrigue the viewer, make a connection, bringing their own experiences to the work. In this session the focus is on the Line……a moving point, a dot that goes for a walk which can vary in length, width, direction and curvature. The alphabet is composed of lines so projects will include each child’s name and letters of the alphabet as a focus for designing an Egyptian Cartouche where children use the hieroglyphic alphabet to sketch the symbols that represent the letters or sounds of their names.  Their names will also be designed into a colorful drawing as they review color theory: primary, secondary, warm, cool, complimentary & tertiary colors. Using their knowledge of color theory and lines they will create an abstract crayon-resist watercolor painting connecting the letters of the alphabet. They’ll practice more line drawings as they learn to draw word art animals and finally design a poster with a short positive message and illustrations to help spotlight their message. • The Witness Stones Project – Thomas Sobuck

St. John's Episcopal Church 3 Cross St, Essex, CT, United States

The Witness Stones Project, a program of Historic New England, seeks to recognize and remember enslaved people who helped build our communities. St. John's Episcopal Church in Essex has placed two Witness Stones in honor of people enslaved by members of our congregation. On October 11, 2026, at 11:45 a.m., the St. John's Speaker Series will tell the story of Thomas Sobuck, a young man from the Nehantic tribe who was indentured to a founding member of the First Episcopal Society of Saybrook as the church was then known since Essex was not incorporated until the mid-1800s. Records reveal that Sobuck's wages from his work aboard the Brig Ann were directed to Charles Williams, a founder of this congregation. This vessel was owned by another member of this congregation, Noah Scovell. The public is invited to learn more, to hear Thomas Sobuck's story, and attend the placing a Witness Stone in his honor in the St. John's Meditation Garden. Members of the Nehantic community will be present to tell their story and to give thanks for the life of their ancestor. St. John's is located on Main Street in Essex at the corner of Cross Street, directly across from the […]

Regina has lived and […]
